Finding Liberland…

11 June 2015

Since 6 weeks we have been stuck on a river bank in Serbia. The place is filled with mosquitos, we have to bathe in the ice cold Danube every day and the WiFi is horrible. Yet we are not leaving any time soon. Why? A new country is being created here and Box and us are part of it. You might have heard about Liberland. If not, read on…

The area that we now call Liberland is a so called Terra Nulius: a piece of land that has not been claimed by any country. Liberland is situated between Serbia and Croatia. Because of a border dispute that has been going on for more than 20 years, none of the two countries wants to claim this piece of land. Last April Czech politician Vít Jedlička said: “Fine, then I will take it” and planted a flag there. And so Liberland was born. Liberland will be a free country with the motto: “Live and let live”. When we read about this we knew: we have to visit this place. As soon as we had the chance, we headed to Croatia to try and find Liberland…..

Our first attempt to find Liberland: cruising through the fields

After 2 days of driving around dry fields, walking through forests and trying to find hidden roads that could possibly lead to Liberland, we finally found a small forest road that took us right to the promised land. Unfortunately a couple of policemen was stationed there and they made us very clear that “we should not be here” and we were kindly but firmly advised to turn around. Mission failed….we understood that getting to Liberland was not as easy as we thought.

One week later, while in Belgrade, we received an invitation by e-mail for ‘Liberland Liberation Day’. All Liberland supporters were invited to come to the nearest town in Serbia to take boats from there to settle in the new country. We did not think one second longer and went straight to Bezdan. Unfortunately the mission with the boats failed, because we were stopped by the Croatian police. Since that day many attempts have been done to set foot on Liberland, sometimes with succes and sometimes without. The one thing that happened every single time: settlers have been arrested by the Croatian police. Whether they traveled from Croatia or Serbia, on foot, by boat or even swimming, the Croatian police went into Liberland and took the settlers forcefully into Croatia to arrest them.

Our first attempt to get to Liberland by boat

We are wondering: how is it possible that the Croatian police enters a piece of land that they claim is not theirs? How can they arrest people in a territory that they claim is Serbian? And at the same time: Serbia has officially announced that Liberland does not belong to them. That officially leaves Liberland a no man’s land and we should have every right to be there without being arrested.

All we know is that we will keep fighting for Liberland. Not because we want to ‘steal’ land from another country, but because this land officially belongs to no other country and is not being used by anyone. This is a once in a lifetime chance to create something completely new! To create a country where we can live by our own rules, where we are not forced to live in a house and work our asses off to pay our taxes and insurances. We will keep fighting until Box has an official Liberland license plate to continue our journey in true freedom.

    Hi,

I have applied for a citizen of LiberLand few months ago :). It is a pity that currently there is no option to create new country, but frankly let’s be honest Serbian and Croatian defends theirs borders.
Probably they afraid of more countries like Liberland will be around them soon. But anyway thanks and good luck 😉

If Liberland will happen, it will take many years to achieve. Hopefully Croatia realizes at one point that there is nothing to be afraid of and that it will be a very positive development for the region. We have to have patience 😉
